THE PROJECT

Project Overview

As part of a major $100 million hospital expansion and renovation, Citizens Memorial Hospital needed to take its existing kitchen and cafeteria out of service while maintaining uninterrupted food service for patients, staff and visitors.

KCI Temporary Kitchens provided a 2,500-square-foot, five-wide temporary kitchen facility for a 24-month deployment. The $965,000 temporary kitchen project created a fully functional commercial food-service environment on the active hospital campus, allowing daily operations to continue while construction of the new permanent kitchen and dining facilities moved forward.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about this temporary kitchen project.

Yes. Temporary commercial kitchens can provide the production, preparation, warewashing and storage capabilities needed to maintain hospital food service during extended renovations. The Citizens Memorial Hospital facility was deployed for 24 months.

Yes. KCI specializes in temporary commercial kitchens for hospitals and other institutional facilities where food service cannot be interrupted. Solutions can range from individual kitchen trailers to large, connected multi-unit facilities such as the five-wide system used at Citizens Memorial Hospital.

Temporary kitchen planning should begin early in the construction process. Facility size, equipment requirements, production volume, utilities, site access, permitting, delivery and installation all need to be coordinated before the permanent kitchen is taken offline

The facility supported a food-service operation producing approximately 1,400+ meals per day. CMH has reported serving more than 500,000 meals annually to patients, staff, visitors and the community.

The facility included a commercial production line, dedicated food preparation area, high-temperature dishmachine, walk-in cooler, walk-in freezer and dry storage to support daily hospital food-service operations.

A temporary kitchen allows the permanent kitchen to be taken out of service so renovation or replacement can proceed while food production continues in a separate facility. This helps maintain food service continuity without requiring construction to work around an operating permanent kitchen.
