Disaster Relief Temporary Mobile Kitchens – Kitchen Corps, Inc
Kitchen Corps, Inc. is currently providing temporary kitchens to the following locations:
University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, TX
5,000 meals/day
In September of 2008, Hurricane Ike hit Galveston, TX bringing with it deathly winds and extremely high tides and heavy rain that caused severe flooding. During the storm the kitchen facility at the University of Texas Medical Branch, which was located in the basement of the facility, was completely flooded and ruined. After the storm, the University, this is also a health care facility, needed to continue food service operations for its students and patients. In June of 2009, Kitchen Corps, Inc. provided a 3,100 sq ft temporary kitchen facility to UTMB that included production, preparation, dish washing, walk in cooler, walk in freezer, and dry storage space. Along with the temporary facility we provided metal decks, ramps, loading dock, and dock lift. After one year of use the operation had grown in size and more room was needed to successfully operate their food service program. As a result Kitchen Corps, Inc. then provided UTMB with a 15,000 sq ft facility that includes a production kitchen, catering kitchen, dish washing area, walk in coolers, walk in freezers, a thawing cooler, a temperature controlled receiving area, dry storage space, offices, restrooms, and a break room for employees. The new facility also includes decks, ramps, two loading docks, and two dock lifts. This rebuild project is expected to last through 2014.
